Greenbelt

Encroachments 1999

Many of our persistent encroachments are mowing of grass that is growing on the greenbelt.  This year the Board has decided to kill the grass, thus decreasing the incentive to mow, and allow more desirable diversity of vegetation to grow.  The product we have chosen to use to kill the grass is glyphosate.  I'm sure many people are concerned about using a herbicide on the greenbelt.  We were concerned too so we did some research on it.  If you would like to read up on it we refer you to Monsanto's web site...http://www.roundup.com/product_info/frameset.html.  A link off this site...MSDS (material safety data sheets)  provides detailed toxicological and environmental information.

L82 continues to mow about 6 feet of greenbelt.  A letter has been sent and the area will be sprayed this summer.

Lot O141 had multiple problems noted this spring.  There was some digging of the greenbelt,  some mowing, and some more mowing.

A new encroachment was discovered at L32.  A large number of small trees were cut and the brush was piled on the greenbelt.  A letter has been sent instructing the lot owner to immediately remove the brush.  We have not yet determined if the cut trees will be replaced.

The greenbelt adjacent to O137 continues to be mowed.  The area just north of the lot has been been sprayed with round-up, and will be replanted when the funds are available.  The area to the south east of the lot is also being mowed (about a 1-5 foot strip)  This will be referred to the Civic Committee.

The long standing encroachment adjacent to lot O139 is now resolved.  Planting is in progress and should be done by the end of the summer.

The legal settlement reached 5 years ago regarding the old Dunham road stated that D.L.P.O.A. gains control of the area this spring. This is adjacent to Lot LC 11.  Planting is now in progress.  The drain in this area is also undergoing some modifications.  Specifically, some of the non-native Norway maples have been removed to provide more sunlight to the area.  These trees have been used to make "check dams" to slow the flow of water.  Some planting has been done in the drain area so that erosion can be controlled.  Our goal is to have vegetation in the drain so that runoff will be diverted into the soil instead of the lake.  Long term plans for the drain are not yet determined.  The drain is under the control of the Livingston Road Commissioner.  Our intial attempts to explore alternatives were met with resistance.  If you are interested in working on this please let the Board know.

The long standing encroachment by lot L66 is now coming to an end.  The lot owner has mowed the greenbelt here for many years, despite multiple letters and requests to stop doing so. In the Fall of 1998 black plastic was applied to kill the grass. The plastic was removed, and not returned to D.L.P.O.A..  Ultra short acting herbicide was then professionally applied, resulting in destruction of the grass.  Planting of more desirable vegetation has occured.

In mid-April the greenbelt was used as a spray paint drop cloth.  This occurred on the high path on the south part of the lake. This was politely cleaned up within 2 days of our request to do so.

During the third week in April a large amount of cut wood and brush was left on the greenbelt adjacent to lot L40.  This was promptly removed.
