The zone in aqua is from the West Beach to a point halfway between the
drain pipe and the new bench. This area has a large amount of
norway maples shading out undergrowth. This area is also the site of
the old Dunham Road. There is a steep hillside here that has been
undergoing gradual erosion.
Our multi-year plan for this area is to gradually remove the norway
maples and encourage native plants to grow on the hillside. It is
unrealistic to expect a complete cessation of erosion on a steep
hillside. Our objective is to slow the erosion so that our
lakeside trail can be maintained. Work was started in this area
in 2004.
The plan for 2005 includes removal of a random 20% of the norway
maples, along with removal of those trees that are interfering with
more desirable trees. The fallen trees will have to be removed
since there is limited space between the hillside and the trail.
This will increase the expense of this project, unless we make it
available for residents to use. We anticipate a cost of $2500 to cut
the trees in 2005.
There is also some scattered glossy buckthorn and autumn olive.
These will be removed by volunteer labor.
An example of a norway maple's shallow roots. Note the huge quantity of
dead leaves.
Norway maples put out a dense canopy, shading out erosion slowing
undergrowth.
The LRP/Civic Committee requested an assessment of this zone in regards
to removal of brush/fallen conifers and cut logs. The LRP will
present a
written proposal, timetable and budget at a later date. Findings of the
April 9, 2005 Board/Civic Committe/LRP walk are presented here...
