Ore Creek
The mauve zone is the area around Ore
creek. This
area has many plants with high floristic quality intermixed with
aggressive invasives. Since it is a wetland it is also a very difficult
area to work in. This area has some healthy poison sumac that is
very beautiful in the fall. It also causes a very intense
rash. The poison sumac will not be disturbed. Purple loosestrife
exploded here in 2004. Extensive effort went into eradication, which
will have to continue in 2005. There is also an abundance of
non-native cattails. These will not be eradicated but attempts have
been made at control. About 30% of the glossy buckthorn has been killed
in this area. This is an area that will require extensive efforts and
continued maintenance. This type of wetland is called a fen, and
these are very rare in southeast Michigan. It provides excellent
habitat for wildlife. We are lucky to have it.
