Lagoon

zone map
The yellow area is from the main park to the southwest corner of the lagoon.  About 10 white cedar trees were planted in 1999 and they have done very well.  Extensive glossy buckthorn removal was done in 2004. This will require follow up in 2005. Some of the non-native autumn olive has been trimmed back so the maturing cedars get have more sun.  The plan is to gradually remove the autumn olive as the other plantings mature. The cedars need sun to grow when they are 4 years old, so there will be a period of time when the autumn olives get cut back to the point that the area will look open.  A large box elder is at the western side of the section. This box elder has two large low hanging branches that will be removed to improve sky exposure for the cedars. In addition, 15 tulip trees will be planted in the open area, with the expectation that 5 will survive.  This is a high moisture area so the tulip trees should do well.  The cedars may get overtaken by these trees in 15 years, but they should be able to tolerate the partial shade. The objective is to have some taller, faster growing trees in place to fill in the area for when the box elder dies. Four new white cedars will also be planted here.

Box elder branches to go on the chopping block....

Branches cut Feb. 9, 2005.

Hacked off box elder.                                                    Cedars will get more light now. Brush will be chipped.

This area has a very large Forsythia bush. This will be gradually cut back as other native plants fill in. Five red cedars were planted in this area 4 years ago. They are a very slow growing tree. The trees appeared to have established excellent root systems and are putting on new growth.  A bramble of raspberries has also taken root here. These will also be cut back and replaced with other plants..
