In 2015 an attempt was made to remove all seed bearing and climbing asian bittersweet and all flowering garlic mustard. This May, 4 college students hired for $15 cleared the garlic mustard from the park The money for this work came out of Park Maintenance's budget. Working with the Grass and Garbage Committee, and Park Maintenance, an attempt will be made to clearly demarkate the areas that are to be maintained by mowing. Given the amount of invasive species in this area, we hope that the company that mows will clean thier equipment before and after mowing this area.
March 17, 2016 Scythe used on garlic mustard rosettes.
Respray groundcover after using string trimmer to damage the leaves. The spraying in 2015 was a total fail. We used 5% scythe plus garlon 2% and 1% surfactant but did not injure the leaves prior to spraying. See 2015 work reports for precise details. Goal is 100% garlic mustard removal in this location, we appear to be on target. Glossy buckthorn is barely under control here. Ideally at least 4 hours of work should be spent in controlling glossy buckthorn in this area this year.
A localized, well advanced asian bittersweet population was removed in summer 2015. This area will require careful followup this year. It is likely that there is an established seed source in this area. It is also likely that not all of the root mass was removed in summer 2015. The ground cover should also be string trimmer injured and resprayed.
Garlic mustard excellent control this year.
The fen will get its own page when we figure out our plans for this year.
Click above for approved plan details. Progress will be recorded on the lagoon page in addition to here. A newly discoved well advanced patch of garlic mustard was discovered by posts 68 and 69. All of the 2nd year plants were pulled, and many of the first year. This area should be carefully followed up as we may have caught it before a massive seed source is set. We also picked a lot of garlic mustard between posts 59 and 64. There is a lot of money plant and huge problems with ground cover in this area. We sprayed the invasive ground cover last fall, it didn't touch it. Total fail.
Garlic mustard pulled April 25, 2016.
Major restoration effort between posts 14 and 16.5, between the upper stair case that goes to Briar Hill Park and near post 16.5, which is just north of the walkway that goes around Parkway Court. First major push occurred on Feb 19, 2016, see link below. This projects page is located here.
Feb 19, 2016 major norway maple control work
Respray groundcover that was sprayed in fall of 2015 after string trimmer induced injury. About 50% of this area's groundcover was sprayed in 2015.
Major garlic mustard and dame's rocket control required in this area. Excellent control this year.
March 20, 2016 sprayed garlic and some dames rocket
Excellent control of garlic mustard this year. Big issue is the lots in this area have uncontrolled garlic mustard. This area has some nice trillium, these will die if the garlic mustard is allowed to run rampant.
