Approved lagoon shoreline management plan

Proposed Oct 2015, Approved at DLPOA Board Meeting Nov 2015

As work gets completed it will be noted at the bottom of this document. All prices are unofficial estimates. Depending on volunteer efforts, costs may be lower.

History: The lagoon shoreline is of variable habitat quality. A significant portion is norway maples and groundcover. Invasives plants, including extensive glossy buckthorn, asian bittersweet and now dog stranglevine have a presence. One of the issues with doing restoration work has been whenever an area is cleared, boats move in. It is hard to motivate to clear invasives when you know someone will be putting their 2 kayaks, stand up paddle board and paddle boat in that spot. The boats take up high quality space, a lot of critters like shorelines.

Goal: Restore shoreline and adjacent property to a more functional ecosystem appropriate for the soil type and hydrology. Prohibit the parking of boats from main park to west beach, except in designated areas. (Areas not yet designated)

Year 1 - $1500 - 2016

1. Spray non-native ground cover with renovate 3 5% and scythe 1%.

2. Hack and squirt, drill and fill or bark application of herbicides - up to 50% of norway maples. Focus around location of oaks and other desirable species

3. Continue ongoing control efforts of problem invasive plants

4. Cease all mowing except for 4 foot wide trails. Clearly demarkate no-mow areas.

Year 2 - $1000 to $3000 - 2017

1. Respray non-native ground cover

2. Consider prescribed burn if appropriate

3. Reseed sprayed areas with monocots if sunlight adequate. Penn sedge might be good first planting.

4. Plant no more than 5 foot tall trees/shurbs, species appropriate for soil type. Expert opinion to be sought prior to planting.

5. Continue ongoing control efforts of problem invasive plants

Year 3 - $1000 to $3000 - 2018

1. Respray non-native groundcover

2. Evaluate reseeding efforts, supplement if required

3 .Hack and squire, drill and fill or bark application of herbicides to remaining norway maples

4. Continue ongoing control efforts of problem invasive plants

Subsequent years

1. Control invasives

2. Periodic prescribed burns

Progress to date- 2015

September and October 2015 - East side of lagoon - asian bittersweet

October 2015 South and west side of lagoon - glossy buckthorn

October 2015 - West side of lagoon - asian bittersweet

Oct 31, 2015 Sprayed groundcover with 1 gallon Renovate 3 with 1% scythe between post 60 and the path. Sprayed about 15 feet west of the path, and almost to lot line. Light drizzle 4 hours after spraying. Temp low 50s. post 60 There are a lot of norway mpales in this immediate area. There are also two mature oak trees and possible some cherry and other species. Will need to hack and spray the norways. Possible replanting here could be penn sedge since it isn't affected by renovate 3. Anticipate at least 3 years to control ground cover. This picture was taken from ground level, it exagerates the slope. I wanted to get the norways and oaks in the picture.
